RootCare Cold & Fatigue Guide

Always Feeling Cold and Tired?

Can acupuncture and moxibustion help? A practical guide to cold hands and feet, persistent low energy, and when medical assessment should come first.

If your hands and feet feel cold even when other people are comfortable, or your energy drops every afternoon, everyday tasks can take more effort. You may also notice bloating, difficulty concentrating, or tiredness that does not lift after rest.

Perhaps warmer clothing, changes to sleep, or supplements have helped a little. When symptoms persist, it is worth looking at the wider picture rather than simply trying harder to push through.

Quick answer: Acupuncture and moxibustion are used in traditional practice for coldness and fatigue, but evidence for this broad symptom combination is limited. Persistent symptoms deserve medical assessment. Complementary care can be discussed for comfort and symptom support alongside appropriate healthcare.

What Can Cause Persistent Cold and Fatigue?

Feeling cold and tired does not automatically mean your metabolism is slow or that you have poor circulation. Sleep, nutrition, medication effects, and medical conditions may all need consideration.

Depending on your symptoms, medical assessment may consider thyroid problems, anaemia, sleep disorders, or other causes. Cold hands and feet, general cold sensitivity, swelling, and fatigue should not all be assumed to have the same explanation.

Symptoms lasting for years are still worth discussing. Duration alone does not establish that a problem is constitutional or rule out a medical cause.

When to Seek Medical Care First

Arrange a medical assessment if you have:
  • Persistent cold sensitivity and fatigue that affect daily life
  • Unexplained weight changes, hair thinning, or a change in your voice
  • Breathlessness with light activity, palpitations, or unusual paleness
  • Ongoing dizziness on standing or episodes of very low blood pressure
  • Significant swelling or marked changes in urination
  • Symptoms that are new, severe, or getting worse

Seek urgent medical help for chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or confusion.

Your GP can review your symptoms and decide whether blood tests or other investigations are appropriate. Normal results do not necessarily explain persistent fatigue, so ongoing symptoms may still need follow-up.

For example, ME/CFS has no single diagnostic test. This does not mean that everyone with fatigue has ME/CFS; it illustrates why assessment involves more than a normal blood result. Read the NICE explanation.

What Are Acupuncture and Moxibustion?

Acupuncture involves inserting fine, sterile, single-use needles at selected points. Moxibustion is a traditional treatment that uses burning mugwort to provide heat near selected areas of the body.

At RootCare, we discuss whether either treatment is appropriate for you. Warmth may feel soothing, but feeling warmer during a session is not proof of a lasting change in circulation, metabolism, or the cause of fatigue.

Moxibustion and a heat pack deliver warmth in different ways. We do not claim that moxibustion is superior to ordinary warmth for persistent coldness or fatigue.

What Does the Research Say?

A 2022 systematic review and network meta-analysis examined acupuncture and moxibustion for chronic fatigue syndrome. It reported potential benefits, but the findings need to be interpreted in light of limitations in the underlying studies. Read the review.

Research involving chronic fatigue syndrome does not establish the same effects for ordinary afternoon tiredness, cold hands and feet, or a presumed slow metabolism. The evidence does not justify promising improved metabolic rate, lasting warmth, or a specific recovery schedule.

If you choose treatment, we agree on goals and review whether it is helping rather than assuming a response.

How Does TCM View Coldness and Fatigue?

Traditional Chinese Medicine considers coldness, digestion, sleep, and energy together. Some presentations are described using Yang deficiency patterns.

These are traditional TCM descriptions used to guide treatment. They do not diagnose kidney disease, digestive dysfunction, or a reduced metabolic rate. Traditional organ names have a different meaning from modern anatomical diagnoses.

Kidney Yang deficiency

Traditional descriptions may include longstanding coldness around the lower back or feet and a sense of low vitality.

We may ask about warmth, sleep, and urinary symptoms. New or persistent urinary changes still need appropriate medical assessment.

Spleen Yang deficiency

TCM may use this description when coldness occurs alongside bloating, loose stools, or fatigue after meals.

We explore eating patterns and digestive symptoms without assuming your body cannot absorb nutrients or process fluids.

What Treatment Might Involve

Your appointment begins with how long symptoms have been present, what affects them, your sleep and digestion, medications, and any previous medical assessments.

If treatment is appropriate, acupuncture or moxibustion may be discussed according to your preferences and presentation. We explain the method before proceeding and adjust or stop if you are uncomfortable.

Comfort and safety matter.

Moxibustion can cause burns, skin irritation, allergic reactions, or discomfort from smoke. Tell us about smoke sensitivity, respiratory conditions, reduced skin sensation, or any concerns about heat. Read the safety review.

Acupuncture may cause temporary soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding; rare serious complications are possible. Relevant risks and alternatives are discussed before treatment.

How Many Sessions Might I Need?

We agree on an initial plan and review your response. There is no fixed number of sessions that suits everyone, and longstanding symptoms do not automatically require an extended course.

Useful review points include whether you feel more comfortable, whether fatigue interferes less with everyday life, and whether any changes last between visits. If progress is limited, we discuss changing the plan or seeking further assessment.

What Improvement Can Look Like

Your goals might include greater comfort during cold weather, less disruption from feeling cold, or a more manageable daily routine. We also ask whether changes in sleep, food, workload, or medical treatment may be contributing.

These are examples of goals, rather than patient case reports or promises of improved circulation or stamina.

What to Expect at RootCare

We take time to understand the full story and any investigations you have already had. If symptoms suggest medical review is needed, we recommend that rather than attributing everything to a TCM pattern.

Care is individual, with a discussion of treatment options, practical comfort measures, and how we will review progress together.

What to Do Between Sessions

  • Use comfortable layers and socks to help you stay warm
  • Choose regular, balanced meals; warm meals are an option if you find them comforting
  • Aim for a manageable sleep routine and notice what affects your energy
  • Avoid forcing yourself through activities that clearly worsen symptoms; discuss your activity tolerance with your clinician
  • Use gentle warmth rather than very hot packs or water, particularly if skin sensation or circulation is reduced
  • Keep a brief record of symptoms and any changes to discuss at follow-up

You do not need to avoid all cold or raw foods, use supplements, or practise moxibustion at home. Comfort measures do not replace assessment of persistent symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to always feel cold and tired?

People differ in how they experience temperature, but persistent cold sensitivity with significant fatigue deserves assessment, especially when symptoms are new, changing, or affecting daily life.

Do I need blood tests before acupuncture?

Your GP can review your symptoms and decide whether blood tests or other investigations are appropriate. There is no single test that rules out every cause of fatigue, and persistent symptoms may need follow-up even when initial results are normal.

Does this mean my metabolism is slow?

Feeling cold and tired does not by itself establish a reduced metabolic rate. We do not use these symptoms alone to diagnose a metabolic problem or promise to boost metabolism.

How is moxibustion different from a heat pack?

Moxibustion uses burning mugwort to provide heat at selected points. A heat pack provides warmth without burning an herb. These are different methods, but that does not establish that moxibustion is more effective for persistent coldness or fatigue.

How many sessions might I need?

We agree on an initial plan and review whether care is making a meaningful difference to your comfort and daily life. There is no fixed recovery timetable. Limited progress or changing symptoms may prompt a different plan or further medical assessment.

When should I see a doctor first?

Seek medical assessment for persistent, new, severe, or worsening cold sensitivity and fatigue, especially with unexplained weight changes, breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, swelling, or changes in urination. Chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or confusion need urgent medical help.
